Step 4: Reviewing a child's progress

How can you review the observations and progress for a given child, and then set the progress grade which they're working at.

To review a child's progress, you'll first want to go to their child dashboard. This can be accessed through the class dashboard sidebar under "Children". We're going to check on George's profile in this example by clicking on his name in the list.

Child Overview Page:

This then brings us to George's dashboard, the overview page is shown below. On the overview page we can see an AI generated summary of what he's been up to recently. This may be useful when handing off to a teacher or teaching assistant, or just quickly checking up on what he's been doing recently without needing to look through observations. Below the summary, you can see all of the Early Learning Goals. This is how we categorise the observations for easy display and review. For example, if you wanted to see all of the observations relating to Managing Self for George, you'd click on Managing Self.

Doing so will bring you in to a page showing all of those observations for George, and an AI generated summary which highlights the broad areas relating to that Early Learning Goal that George hasn't yet demonstrated. The idea behind this summary is that it may surface any blind spots relating to a child's progress which you could then feed back in to your planning process. This could be handy when reviewing the progress across the class ahead of a checkpoint reporting date.

How to set a grade for a child's progress towards an ELG

Then, you are able to assign a progress grade to George based on your view of the level he is working at. You can do this by pressing on one of the coloured progress ratings at the top of the page. It's important to note that the determination of what progress grade a child's working at is only ever done by you or a member of your teaching staff. AI never makes this determination. If your school has a different selection of progress grades than the default one, you are able to modify the progress grades displayed in app (more information here). If you decide that George is at a "Working Towards" level and select it, the highlighted level will change. Then, when you go back to George's overview, the colour of the Managing Self card for George will change, indicating that he's working at a lower level in that area than the other areas (which are all still showing green for "Expected").

You can choose to make a determination of a child's grade all at once at a given reporting checkpoint date, or gradually throughout the year, whatever best fits your setting's way of doing things.

Either way, over time, a child's dashboard will, because of this, begin to show a colour coded representation of their abilities across the different areas. You could then use the child's dashboard to inform activity planning focussing on areas where they need most support.

The child's progress data also feeds through to the class overview dashboard, which gives you an overall picture of the class's progress (more information here).

View all observations for a child

You can review all observations made for a given child by clicking on "Observations" at the top of dashboard. These observations are not grouped by Early Learning Goal.

Review all observations which need review for a Child

You can also review all the observations which need review for a given child, however at this point in time, George doesn't have any observations needing review.

By clicking on the "Student Settings" button in the top right of the dashboard, you can access George's settings page. Find out more about the settings page here.
